A Workshop to Introduce Actors to the Meisner Technique

During this 5 evening workshop we will explore how to act moment to moment, behave instead of thinking, following impulses instead of following a scheme. We will have an introduction to Meisner’s tools to improve acting skills: Through the famous repetition exercise, we will work on listening to your partner carefully and letting yourself be changed in a heartbeat. This work will also lead us to improve your emotional fluidity, and accept your instincts as gifts.

Based on the work of Sandford Meisner and Lee Strasberg among others, Lucas helps students to find their way of acting through moments of truth, reconnecting with their emotions, taking the emphasis away from self and focusing on partners on stage. He also teaches how to build characters (see “Introduction to Building a Character” class), from identifying their primal need, to the way they walk. Being an actor is being a creator, giving script pages a soul, a body and emotions. Being an actor is making smart choices. Being an actor is believing in the unbelievable and make the audience believe with you. But, before all, being an actor is playing, having fun, and reconnecting with the inner child that you might have forgotten.

About the Instructor – Lucas Rue

Lucas RueLucas studied in ESRA (Ecole Supérieure de Réalisation Audiovisuelle) in PARIS. After his graduation in 2006, he worked on more than 60 films (Short Films, Music Videos, Documentaries, TV Shows and Feature Films) as Director, Assistant Director, Director of Photography, Cameraman and Gaffer.
Lucas studied acting alongside two of the most famous acting coaches in the U.S (Bob Mc Andrew and Susan Batson). Being their assistant and cameraman for 4 years, he acquired the skills he needed to pursue his work as filmmaker. As he was continuously working on film set, Lucas had eventually the opportunity to teach in one of the most prestigious acting school in Paris, “L’Entrée des Artistes” directed by Olivier BELMONDO. As “acting on screen” teacher for this institution for more than ten years, Lucas developed and sharpened his own method of teaching acting.
In 2017, he moved to Japan to continue is work as acting coach and filmmaker.

FAQ:

I have taken Meisner classes before. Can I join this class anyway?

If you want to refresh your memory, ease back into acting after a break and also get to know the tutor’s way of working, you will still benefit from joining this class. However if you are worried that an introductory course will not be challenging enough for you, you are welcome to join the ongoing training group right away. Please email the tutor directly, if you are unsure which level is right for you.

I have never taken an acting class before. Can I join this course?

Yes! Our introductory courses are suitable for both complete beginners as well as experienced actors, who want to learn a particular new technique.

If I miss a class, can I make it up at a later date?

If you know at the time of booking the class that you will be absent during one specific date, you can make up for the session the next time the course is repeated (introductory courses repeat every 5 to 10 weeks).

In case of missing a class because of a serious emergency, you can also make up the missed class the next time.

However, if you miss a class for personal reasons, the class can unfortunately not be made up.

I am not a native English speaker and am worried that my language level will not be high enough. Can I still join this course?

Absolutely! Many of our students are not native speakers of English. The classes are a great place to become more comfortable speaking English in an international environment, while improving your acting skills.

I want to practise scenes in English but I don’t understand English instructions very well. Is there a Japanese translator available?

We don’t provide an official translator, but – though not guaranteed – usually there are bilingual students in each class, who can help you out if you have questions. The tutors are also always happy to explain things more slowly and simply if you need extra help understanding an exercise or direction.
