SUMMARY:Voice and Body from Practice to Performance
DESCRIPTION:In this 6 evening intensive course you will move your body and use your voice in challenging and focused exercises to learn the principles of the “SAFE method” and the powerful skill of “teaching yourself ”! \nBy the end of the course you will have a clear grasp of your true potential as a performer by exploring and fine tuning your instrument (body and voice)\, examining possibilities of expression and exploring in depth the power of details in your every word\, motion and deliberately executed choice\, when embodying a character\, text or story. You will learn a systematic approach to identifying and eliminating the obstacles in the way of your creative freedom and your best performance\, by finding new exciting ways of bringing a story to life and being present in the moment using fundamental tools of the acting craft\, as applied by actors across the globe\, from stage to screen to voice- and motion capture performance in video games and new media. \nThis acting masterclass was created using feedback from our students as well as insights acquired during previous iterations of the course. This is a great opportunity for previous students to reinforce what they learned and apply it; and for new participants to benefit from this highly successful process. \nThe course utilizes principles and exercises of the SAFE method. An original system developed by Masanari Sasaki to allow the actor (and any artist or creative human being) to become: \nSelf-expressed\nAuthentic\nFree\nEnergized \nCourse Schedule\nDay one: The actor’s body: The extraordinary instrument for storytelling.\nDay two: The actor’s voice. Produced by the actor’s body. Speaking the text.\nDay three: Presence. Being in the moment. Concerns and freedom.\nDay four: The character in context of a play\, a scene or a speech.\nDay five: Rehearsal and performance . All participants will perform a group scene\, movement based with no words.\nDay six: Rehearsal and performance. All participants will perform a monologue. \nAll six days of the course include a small warm up routine as well as practical exercises that will challenge the actor physically and mentally. At the end of the course the actor will have a new relationship to their body\, voice and text that will empower them and open them up to new possibilities as artists. \nAbout the instructor\nMasanari Sasaki is from Shizuoka\, Japan. He grew up and received his education in the United States. He is a graduate of the PTTP at the University of Delaware where he received his MFA in theatre. \nDuring his training he studied and worked with internationally renowned directors and coaches (Jewel Walker\, Adrian Hall\, Tadashi Suzuki\, Heinz Uwe-Haus\, The Roy Heart Theatre) in a variety of styles focusing mostly on classical plays. \nSome notable influences in his teaching and coaching method are the exercises and directing style of Tadashi Suzuki\, whose company he joined right after graduating upon his return to Japan. \nAlso the approach to movement from the corporeal mime of Etienne Decroux and the possibility of the human voice as explored by Kristin Linklater and The Roy Hart Theatre.

After working in regional theater under the guidance of Tony award winning Director\, Adrian Hall\, Jim relocated to New York City where his career shifted to daytime soap operas\, episodic television and Emmy award winning national network commercials. Thereafter\, Jim explored the growing trend as a television host with his own shows on the USA network amongst others. Throughout his pursuits\, Jim steadily trained with Gary Swanson\, a first generation acting pupil of Lee Strasberg and lifetime member of The Actor’s Studio. Jim enjoys teaching the knowledge he has been fortunate enough to obtain and now looks forward to sharing the same with Tokyo performing artists. \nFAQ:\nIf I miss a class\, can I make it up at a later date?\nIf you know at the time of booking your package that you will be absent during one specific date\, the missed class can be added at the end of the package instead. If you want to get a first impression before committing to a class\, please join our monthly drop-in sessions! \nI am joining both\, Jim’s and Lucas’ ongoing classes – can I work on the same materials in both classes or do they need to be different ones?\nIn order for a consistent workflow in each class we recommend that you work on different materials in each class. That way you can focus on applying one approach at a time and discover step by step which elements of each method work best for yourself. \nI have an audition coming up. Can I prepare for it in the ongoing class\, even if I was working on a different scene or monologue before?\nOf course! We will prioritise anything you need to work on towards a tight deadline! \nDo I always have to bring my own scenes or monologues?\nGenerally\, no. We ask you to bring something in the beginning so we can get to work right away\, but once you’ve been working with us for a while the tutor will provide you with materials best suited to your progress. We are always open to your wishes and suggestions\, so if you have something particular in mind that you’d like to work on just let the tutor know.

We will also work on how to approach a scene out of the whole context of the script and nonetheless create an interesting and meaningful emotional curve for your character. \nThis work will help you to expand your skills on the six qualities of your instrument: Physicality\, Intelligence\, Imagination\, Personal experiences\, sensory faculties\, and Empathy. \nFor those actors aiming at a professional career – especially in an international market – longterm\, ongoing training is crucial. In this group class you will receive consistent training\, challenges and feedback based on your own level and progress. \nYou can join the classes at the beginning of each new month by booking a 1-month\, 3-month or 6-month package (with discounts for longer upfront commitment).\nTo truly dive in deep and see real\, lasting progress\, staying committed for at least a 6-month period to training with the same tutor is highly encouraged (even if you choose to book month by month). \nWhen joining the class for the first time\, please bring a monologue\, a scene or any materials that you would like to work on with you.\nIf you have your materials ready in advance\, please send them directly to the tutor:\nlucas@actingcoachjapan.com \n2023 Dates:\nFEB: 6\, 13\, 20\, 27\nMAR: 6\, 13\, 20\, 27\nAPR: 3\, 10\, 17\, 24\nMAY: 8\, 15\, 22\, 29\nJUN: 5\, 12\, 19\, 26\nJUL: 3\, 10\, 17\, 24\nAUG: 7\, 14\, 21\, 28\nSEP: 4\, 11\, 18\, 25\nOCT: 2\, 9\, 16\, 23\nNOV: 6\, 13\, 20\, 27\nDEC/JAN: 4\, 11/ 22\, 29 \nOFF DAYS:\nMAY 1\, JUL 31\, OCT 30\, DEC 18 & 25\, JAN 1\, 8 & 15 \nBook as Part of a Package\n\nAbout the Instructor – Lucas Rue\nLucas studied in ESRA (Ecole Supérieure de Réalisation Audiovisuelle) in PARIS. After his graduation in 2006\, he worked on more than 60 films (Short Films\, Music Videos\, Documentaries\, TV Shows and Feature Films) as Director\, Assistant Director\, Director of Photography\, Cameraman and Gaffer.\nLucas studied acting alongside two of the most famous acting coaches in the U.S (Bob Mc Andrew and Susan Batson). Being their assistant and cameraman for 4 years\, he acquired the skills he needed to pursue his work as filmmaker. As he was continuously working on film set\, Lucas had eventually the opportunity to teach in one of the most prestigious acting school in Paris\, “L’Entrée des Artistes” directed by Olivier BELMONDO. As “acting on screen” teacher for this institution for more than ten years\, Lucas developed and sharpened his own method of teaching acting.\nIn 2017\, he moved to Japan to continue is work as acting coach and filmmaker. \nFAQ:\nIf I miss a class\, can I make it up at a later date?\nIf you know at the time of booking your package that you will be absent during one specific date\, the missed class can be added at the end of the package instead.\nIn case of missing a class because of a serious emergency\, you can also make up the missed class at the end of your package.\nHowever\, if you miss a class for personal reasons\, the class can unfortunately not be made up (such as feeling unwell without any heavy symptoms\, working overtime or taking a mental health day). If the tutor has to cancel a class due to an emergency or otherwise unforeseen circumstances\, the missed class will automatically be added to the end of your package\, or credited towards any class date of your choice within the following month. \nDo I need to take the “Introduction to Meisner” and “Building a Character” class before joining the ongoing one?\nIf you have previous acting experience you are welcome to join the ongoing training right away. Please contact the tutor directly to confirm before booking.\nIf you have never taken an acting class before\, the introductory classes are a better starting point. \nCan I audit the class before joining?\nIn order for our classes to remain a safe working space for our students we don’t allow audits.

SUMMARY:(Screen)Writer's Meetup
DESCRIPTION:Wednesdays 3pm-6pm\n1000¥ (cash at the door) \nIn a nutshell: \n\nSit together and write in a calm\, creative and focused atmosphere\nReceive feedback\, share your work and meet fellow writers at the end\nJoin and leave whenever you like – no pressure to be on time or share\nCoffee\, tea\, water\, earplugs\, paper and pens provided\nWeekly themes with prompts and ideas to spark your creativity\nBring your own laptop/tablet/notebook\n\nWhy do we still go to the cinema\, when we can watch everything on our own screen at home now? \nWell\, sometimes we need a break from the distractions\, the reminders of everything outside of the magical realms that a story can take us. \nSo just as we benefit from the quiet\, the dark\, the atmosphere and the people around us when we go out to immerse ourselves in the world of a movie\, the same things can help to evoke our own creativity too. \nAt the ELFS Writer’s Meetup\, for 3 hours every week the ELFS studio is transformed into a room of possibilities. \nWe provide the space and the atmosphere – you bring the stories. \nSchedule:\nFrom 3:00-5:00pm we sit together and write quietly. \nYou can work on an ongoing project or make use of weekly prompts and exercises we provide. \nThere is a theme each week and some inspiration around if you feel stuck – and there are earplugs provided if you just want to dive right into your own story. \nFrom 5:00-6:00pm there is the option to share your work and your experience\, read out loud what you wrote or have others read it to you. \nThroughout the entire session there is tea\, coffee and water available as well as a few snacks (the type you can quietly munch on without interrupting your focus or disturb the peace of other writers). \nWho is this for?\nAnyone\, who wants to write. \nThere are no limits\, regulations or entry criteria other than the commitment to sit and focus on your own work for the time you are in the room. \nWhile this is a screenwriting focused event\, there are really no limits to what you can work on. Feel free to join with any type of writing project in mind or already in progress!

SUMMARY:Introductory Workshop: The Strasberg Method
DESCRIPTION:Jim O’Connor brings method acting to Tokyo.\nJoin New York City’s Jim O’Connor for a weekend workshop as he introduces method acting and sense memory as developed by Lee Strasberg. Learn the basic technique used to privately unlock your treasure chest of emotions and meet the demands of the play. Comfortable clothing and an open\, honest willingness is all you need. \nCourse description\nJim studied privately with Gary Swanson\, a first generation pupil of Lee Strasberg and lifetime member of The Actor’s Studio. \nSense memory\, the backbone of method acting\, allows the actor to meet the emotional demands of the character and illuminate the play. Living truthfully under imaginary circumstances requires a profound understanding of oneself\, courageous discipline and a training of the senses. Only in this way can we bring real life to the stage when imagination alone is insufficient. \nMethod acting training develops the tools needed to privately access the actor’s reservoir of emotions thus clearing a path for transformative expression and dissolution of self consciousness. \nAbout Jim O’Connor\nJim O’Connor received his bachelor of fine arts degree in acting from the University of Rhode Island\, USA\, where he studied the Meisner method.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Meisner's Method
DESCRIPTION:A Workshop to Introduce Actors to the Meisner Technique\nDuring this 2 hour class we will explore how to act moment to moment\, behave instead of thinking\, following impulses instead of following a scheme. We will have an introduction to Meisner’s tools to improve acting skills : Through the famous repetition exercise\, we will work on listening to your partner carefully and letting yourself be changed in a heart beat. This work will also lead us to improve your emotional fluidity\, and accept your instincts as gifts. \nBased on the work of Sanford Meisner and Lee Strasberg among others\, Lucas helps students to find their way of acting through moments of truth\, reconnecting with their emotions\, taking the emphasis away from self and focusing on partners on stage. He also teaches how to build characters\, from identifying their primal need\, to the way they walk. Being an actor is being a creator\, giving script pages a soul\, a body and emotions. Being an actor is making smart choices. Being an actor is believing in the unbelievable and make the audience believe with you. But\, before all\, being an actor is playing\, having fun\, and reconnecting with the inner child that you might have forgotten. \nAbout the Instructor – Lucas Rue\nLucas studied in ESRA (Ecole Supérieure de Réalisation Audiovisuelle) in PARIS. Often they feel a barrier between themselves and the talent and even a little fear in trying to communicate with them. \nThis single evening aims to start to break down that barrier. To give an understanding of what actors require from their directors and to begin to learn how to develop character and bring out performance. \nAreas covered in the course include: \n\nScreen versus Stage\nDeveloping Character and Performance\nDirecting for the Frame\nAction and Reaction\nVocal Levels\nAuditions and Rehearsals\n\nClass Schedule\nOctober 24 (Thurs)\, 19:00-21:30 \nAbout the Instructor – Rory O’ Donnell\nELFS Japan founder Rory O’Donnell began his career in the entertainment industry following two years of acting training at London’s ‘Poor School’. From there is acting career covered all sizes of theatre stage from intimate ‘pub theatres’ to the West End stage directed by triple Oscar nominee Stephen Daldry. With stage work interspersed with occasional film and TV roles\, it was in short film that Rory decided to make his directing debut. \nRory’s shorts have played in festivals across Europe and North America\, in which he has directed such actors as Julian Glover (James Bond\, Indiana Jones)\, Sylvester McCoy (Doctor Who\, The Hobbit) and Caroline Munro (Hammer Horror\, James Bond)\, amongst many established and new talent. Since coming to Japan Rory has continued to direct short films\, in Japanese\, with actors who have worked with directors such as Sion Sono and Takashi Miike. \nBefore setting up ELFS Japan Rory ran the training for Raindance in London for ten years\, while also working as a casting director for independent films. SUMMARY:Screenwriting for Beginners
DESCRIPTION:Learn the essentials of Screenwriting\nWho is this class for?\nThis screenwriting class is designed for the absolute novice\, one who has never written a complete feature script. In addition\, it is particularly sensitive to the needs of those for whom English is a second language. Although native speakers are welcome and the class introduces a lot of jargon\, it will be taught at general-vocabulary level appropriate for all learners of English. \nWhat will this class teach you?\nWhile university-level film school classes will take you through baby steps as you learn to construct a scene and character\, etc.\, this screenwriting class aims to compress all that is taught through several years of film school into five easy nights. By the end of the class\, you will be more than ready to start writing a full-length (90-to-120-page) feature script. Future classes will go beyond the basics contained within this one to look at such things as TV pilots\, ensemble films\, and character pieces. While many great films break the rules\, this class will teach you the basics you must know before you decide to ignore and/or improve on them. \nSchedule\n03 September 2019 — 19:00-21:30 \n10 September 2019 —19:00-21:30 \n17 September 2019 —19:00-21:30 \n24 September 2019 —19:00-21:30 \n1 October 2019 —19:00-21:30 \nMeet the Instructor – Matthew Allen\n \nMatthew Allen is an award-winning Australian screenwriter who has written and rewritten scripts for\, and optioned scripts to\, the producers of such films as The Boondock Saints (Willem Dafoe)\, The Bucket List (Jack Nicholson\, Morgan Freeman)\, and Grudge Match (Sylvester Stallone\, Robert De Niro). Allen studied screenwriting under such luminaries as UCLA’s Richard Walter and Academy-Award-winning screenwriter\, Leonard Schrader. In addition\, he has worked in both development and production\, interning for such power-players as Jon Landau (Titanic\, Avatar). Having seen the business from the inside and out\, Allen knows what both Hollywood readers (one of which he has been) and screenwriting competitions (several of which he has placed in) are looking for. Allen has lived in Japan for years and speaks with an easy-to-understand\, American accent. Find out more about Matthew Allen. \nClass 1: Structure\nStorytelling has ancient rules that transcend culture. You are not the first person to ever consider writing a story and this class will teach you the basic and universal formula that is seldom strayed from. These fundamentals\, while not to be viewed dogmatically\, are perhaps part of our\, as humans\, genetic makeup—and therefore must be understood before being deviated from. \n\nThe Hero’s Journey\nThree-act structure\nClassical unities\nStakes\nTicking clock\nDramatic irony\nSet-up and payoff\n\nHomework: Prepare own idea. \nClass 2: Character\nFamed screenwriting guru\, Robert McKee argues that the age-old debate as to which comes first\, character or story\, is an oxymoron. McKee argues that character is story and this class will show you how to weave your character into the very fabric of your plot. The class will go beyond McKee however\, to look at more recent screenwriting theorists who have built on his work. \n\nArchetypes\nEmpathetic vs. sympathetic characters\nOuter goal\nInner need\nTransformational arc\nAristotelian dilemmas\nThree-dimensional characters\n\nHomework: Prepare pitch of own idea. \nClass 3: Action Lines\nThe screenplay differs from the play or the novel\, and this class will show you precisely how it does so. The script for the 1979 classic\, Alien was once described as “beat poetry” and screenwriting has\, since then\, developed more and more of its own style and conventions in terms of prose. This class will guide you through how to use the English language beautifully\, from the all-important first page to the final “FADE OUT” at the end. \n\nOpening image\nShow\, don’t tell\nCharacter first appearances\nPanache\nTransitions\nBookending\n\nHomework: Prepare structure of own idea. \nClass 4: Dialogue\nDialogue may merely be the icing on the proverbial cake\, but many an audience member lives for its taste. One Japanese film student once remarked to me that he was stunned to learn of the complex layers of meaning in the dialogue in Hollywood fare. This class will show you just what he was talking about. \n\nConflict\nExposition\nSubtext\nVoice for each character\n\nHomework: Prepare one-page outline of own idea. \nClass 5: Formatting\nAs McKee once said\, any Hollywood reader who tosses a script for poor formatting and typos should be fired; after all\, as the Shakespeare goes\, “The play’s the thing”. Nonetheless\, the fact remains that formatting is used by Hollywood’s gatekeepers as a shorthand code for sorting the pros from the amateurs. In this screenwriting class\, you will learn that code\, one that is as essential to screenwriting as BASIC is to programming. \n\nImpressing readers\nScene headings\nCapitalization\nParentheticals\nAcronyms and numbers\, etc. within dialogue\n\nHomework: Write first ten pages of own idea (as preparation for advanced class).
