
Award Winners from Toronto International Film Festival 2018
The Toronto International Film Festival is one of the largest publicly attended film festivals in the world — attracting over 480,000 people annually — and serves as the last stop on the major film festival circuit before the awards season at the beginning of the new year. Over the years, the buzz created during TIFF has carried on to the Academy Award and Golden Globes award ceremonies. Films that won the TIFF People’s Choices Awards and gone on to earn nomination or even win Best Picture Oscar include: Chariots of Fire (1981), The Big Chill (1983), Places in the Heart (1984), Shine (1996), Life is Beautiful (1997), American Beauty (1999), Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), Slumdog Millionaire (2008), Precious (2009), The King’s Speech (2010), Silver Linings Playbook (2012), 12 Years a Slave (2013), The Imitation Game (2014), and Room (2015)
TIFF 2018 wrapped up on Sunday and the People’s Choices Awards, International Jury Awards, Short Film Jury Awards and Canadian Film Jury Awards were announced. Whether this year’s TIFF People’s Choice Award winner,”Green Book”, a Peter Farrelly-directed film about a Jamaican-American pianist touring the American Deep South in the 1960s continue the TIFF to Oscar trend will be seen next February at the 91st Academy Award in February 2019.
